Gershwin’s 3 Preludes
Some people seem to be taken from us too soon, and American composer George Gershwin (1898 –1937) is one of them.
In his short 38 years he wrote concertos (Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F), a tone poem (An American in Paris), and an opera (Porgy and Bess), all of which remain in the art music repertory today.
In addition, Gershwin wrote Broadway musicals, film scores, and numerous songs. The Three Preludes referenced in this article were first performed by the composer in 1926. The piece is in three movements: Allegro ben ritmato e deciso, Andante con moto e poco rubato, and Allegro ben ritmato e deciso. Each piece remains in the piano repertory, especially for young, advanced performers. Here he is performing his own music. (5:00)
