Jesus Paid It All

I had a dire moment recently when I was completely helpless.  My dear wife had fallen from a tree and landed on her head on concrete.  She was dazed and confused, with blood streaming from her ear.  We called 911 and the paramedics took very good care of her, although her situation was desperate, as we discovered in the emergency room of the hospital.  The staff did what they could, although the prognosis was serious: subdural hematoma, fractured cranium in several places, unconsciousness, disorientation.

Who could have known that only 15 days later she would be out of the emergency room, out of intensive care, out of progressive care, and coming home from rehab, up to a week earlier than anticipated!  I asked the therapists and doctor to what they attributed her early release.  They all said the same thing: she was in good shape when the injury occurred (Louise credits her plant-based diet) and her hard work in her therapy sessions (I thanked the medical team for their wonderful work with her).  I also said to each professional, “And there were about 70 people praying for her.”  The therapists listened politely.  The doctor, however, when I told her, looked me straight in the eye, pointed a finger at me and said firmly, “The power of prayer!”

My point is: I was helpless.  I couldn’t do what those medical professionals could do and certainly not what God himself did.  I suppose we've all had moments of helplessness.

The song in this post, “Jesus Paid It All” celebrates our complete helplessness to make things right with God.  Like someone who owes an exorbitant sum of money, we are completely unable to pay God back, so Jesus, in his death on the cross, paid it all.

Edward Wolfe

Edward Wolfe has been a fan of Christian apologetics since his teenage years, when he began seriously to question the truth of the Bible and the reality of Jesus. About twenty years ago, he started noticing that Christian evidences roughly fell into five categories, the five featured on this website.
Although much of his professional life has been in Christian circles (12 years on the faculties of Pacific Christian College, now a part of Hope International University, and Manhattan Christian College and also 12 years at First Christian Church of Tempe), much of his professional life has been in public institutions (4 years at the University of Colorado and 19 years at Tempe Preparatory Academy).
His formal academic preparation has been in the field of music. His bachelor degree was in Church Music with a minor in Bible where he studied with Roger Koerner, Sue Magnusson, Russel Squire, and John Rowe; his master’s was in Choral Conducting where he studied with Howard Swan, Gordon Paine, and Roger Ardrey; and his doctorate was in Piano Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature, where he also studied group dynamics, humanistic psychology, and Gestalt theory with Guy Duckworth.
He and his wife Louise have four grown children and six grandchildren.
