Merry Christmas!

HIS, 1970-71

As a special Christmas gift to you, here’s the original album of HIS, the group I played with during my first two years of college.

The 12 songs below make up our album, which we recorded during our first year together, 1970-1971.

Links are to the words on the internet.

  1. Psalm 19, Sonny Salsbury

  2. He's Everything to Me, Ralph Carmichael

  3. A Living Circle, Ralph Carmichael (lyrics unavailable due to copyright)

  4. Easy To Be Hard, Gerome Ragni, James Rado, Galt Mac Dermot, from the musical Hair

  5. Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Simon and Garfunkel

  6. Savior Like A Shepherd Lead Us, William B. Bradbury and Dorothy A. Thrupp

  7. HIS, Edward Wolfe (lyrics below)

  8. Jesus Walked this Lonesome Valley, American spiritual

  9. Cryin' Holy unto the Lord, Bill Monroe

  10. For Those Tears I Died, Marsha Stevens-Pino

  11. Natural High, Ralph Carmichael, from the musical Natural High

  12. He's There Waiting, Ralph Carmichael

With this group, I traveled about 100,000 miles across the southwest United States, performing in a variety of venues: parks, camps, and mostly churches. The churches at this time were unaccustomed to hearing a Christian group perform secular music, like “Easy to Be Hard” and “Bridge over Troubled Waters.” Use of drums in a worship service also was somewhat controversial.

The personnel in the group were:

  1. Christine Chatham, soprano

  2. Donna Wood, mezzo soprano

  3. Loralee Borga, alto

  4. Guy Glimpse, tenor

  5. Ron Cushing, bass

  6. Dave Mayfield, guitar, banjo

  7. Craig Wallace, bass guitar

  8. Guy Hutchison, drums

  9. Edward Wolfe, piano

We all performed on various instruments, including banjo and other vocals.

Lyrics to our theme song, “HIS:”

Meaning and purpose and peace of mind,

Shackles of selfishness left behind,

Freedom to know the truth as it stands,

All these are mine.

The love of a God who made the stars,

The strength of a power much stronger than ours,

The promise of life forever with him,

How can I respond?

O God, will you take me?

Remold me and make me?

You make me so happy,

Now that I am completely yours,

Totally His,

Completely His.

Who are we that God should care?

Can we deserve the vast riches he shares?

Nothing can repay his sacrifice:

That is why we are

Completely His, completely His.

Edward Wolfe

Edward Wolfe has been a fan of Christian apologetics since his teenage years, when he began seriously to question the truth of the Bible and the reality of Jesus. About twenty years ago, he started noticing that Christian evidences roughly fell into five categories, the five featured on this website.
Although much of his professional life has been in Christian circles (12 years on the faculties of Pacific Christian College, now a part of Hope International University, and Manhattan Christian College and also 12 years at First Christian Church of Tempe), much of his professional life has been in public institutions (4 years at the University of Colorado and 19 years at Tempe Preparatory Academy).
His formal academic preparation has been in the field of music. His bachelor degree was in Church Music with a minor in Bible where he studied with Roger Koerner, Sue Magnusson, Russel Squire, and John Rowe; his master’s was in Choral Conducting where he studied with Howard Swan, Gordon Paine, and Roger Ardrey; and his doctorate was in Piano Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature, where he also studied group dynamics, humanistic psychology, and Gestalt theory with Guy Duckworth.
He and his wife Louise have four grown children and six grandchildren.
