The Origin of the Universe shows God exists
Our cosmos seems to have begun suddenly about 13 billion years ago (Lumen, 2021). This sudden beginning, known as the Big Bang, probably was first proposed by the Belgian priest and cosmologist Georges Lemaître (1894-1966) who called it the “hypothesis of the primeval atom.” He derived his model in part from the recession of nearby galaxies and the corresponding theory of the expanding universe, which was confirmed by the observations of American astronomer Edwin Hubble (1889-1953).
I remember my physics teacher in high school describing the “Steady State Universe,” a universe with no beginning and no end, during the 1960s. It was, according to my teacher, a popular theory at that time but since has been pretty much replaced by the Big Bang theory (the theory in astronomy, not the TV sitcom).
The expanding universe is well accepted among astronomers and cosmologists today, and helps to establish the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe. It implies that originally the universe must have expanded from something infinitesimally small. Even space and time are said to have originated in the first moments of the Big Bang.
Our entire universe seems to have begun. Something that begins to exist must have been caused by something outside of itself. Something--or, according to the Bible, Someone--must have caused the universe to have begun. The universe really is here, so there really must be a Cause outside of the universe. The cause is the God of the Bible (Genesis 1:1), also known as Jesus: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). Since the universe is real, Jesus is real, and the God of the Bible is the true creator.
